Sense and Sensibility

A contemporary interpretation of the novel Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen, redesigned for a new generation of visually aware readers.

Based on the dichotomy between sense and sensibility. Reflecting on the two characters’ personalities and linking to the Neoclassic and Romantic movements. This idea is reflected in many ways within the book, such as the use of two different typefaces (Baskerville Regular & Didot Italic) and two coloured paperstocks alternated throughout the book. The title of the book has also been split into two halves, using the two typefaces.

Elinor's dialogue has been set in lowercase to represent her reserved personality. In contrast, Marianne's dialogue is larger and of italic style to portray her rushed spontaneous nature.

Neoclassicism and Romanticism, the movements in which the book were written and the ideas that the two characters’ personalities portray, have been linked within the book through the imagery and the typeface choice. The use of black and white imagery suggests ‘only seeing in black and white’ and the use of pink transparent
tip-in pages illustrates the idea of ‘looking through rose-tinted glasses.’
