Shakh Ismail Khatai

A sketch of Shakh Ismail Khatai, the legendary warlord and poet of Azerbaijan. Shah Ismail Safavi, also known as Shah Ismail or Shah Ismail I (full name: Abu'l-Muzaffar Ismail ibn Heydar al-Safavi; July 17, 1487 – May 23, 1524) was the leader (sheikh) of the Safavid order (1494–1524) and the founder and first Shah of the Safavid dynasty. He was also a poet. In July 1501, he ascended to the throne in Tabriz, Azerbaijan, establishing the Shah's authority.

By the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 7, 2019, with Resolution No. 211, Shah Ismail Khatai was included in the list of authors whose works are declared national heritage in the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Safavid state he created existed until 1736. Ismail, starting from 1501, established the Safavid order based on the Twelve Imams Shiism in South Azerbaijan, and in 1509, he united all of Iran, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Eastern Anatolia, and other territories into a single state.

He wrote his literary works under the pseudonym "Khatai," and is also known as Shah Ismail Khatai. He primarily wrote in Azerbaijani Turkish, partially in Persian, and Arabic.
