This illustration was created for a project for my MFA program. I wanted to make a middle grade book cover inspired by Columbus, Ohio's The Book Loft which I was able to visit while in the city. The book cover is inspired by the magical and mysterious books that I loved reading while growing up. 

I started this project by generating multiple thumbnails. My first iteration of the cover showed a bird's eye view of the building. Ultimately I went with a straight-on orientation because it fit better with the text and cover layout.
