Revitalizing Potsdam's Historic District: A Collaborative Urban Design Endeavor
A SCHINKEL PREIS COMPETITION 2012
Proposed Master-Plan
A captivating project that emerged from an urban design module at BTU Cottbus. Our team of three, including myself, Ibrahim El-Najjar, and Joyce Abou Moussa, worked together on a proposal for the Schinkel Preis competition 2012, aiming to rejuvenate and elevate Potsdam's cherished historic district. Our multifaceted approach encompassed three distinctive levels, each weaving together to breathe new life into the urban fabric:

1- Harmonizing Tradition and Innovation: Preserving the outer shell of the GDR buildings adjacent to the historical center, we skillfully introduced contemporary urban footprints. By carefully integrating public and semi-public intermediate spaces, we fostered an environment that beautifully bridges the past and present.

2- Unveiling Historical Gems: With a keen eye for architectural heritage, we accentuated vantage points and established strategic axes that eloquently pointed toward Potsdam's iconic landmarks. This thoughtful design element celebrates the rich history and guides visitors on a mesmerizing journey through time.

3- Rediscovering the Waterfront's Charms: Adjacent to the historical district, we embarked on a transformative venture to revive the abandoned waterfront. Our vision was to create a convivial open space, beckoning locals and visitors alike. By repurposing this neglected area, we revitalized its allure and enriched the overall urban experience.

Furthermore, our project ambitiously extended the concept of the productive landscape from Sanssouci to the garden city area across the river. By meticulously planting productive trees on a modular grid, we seamlessly merged nature's bounty with urban living, fostering sustainability and harmony within the community.
