Sensorium - "Make Something Invisible"

A one week project done for Nicholas Evans-Cato's Foundation Design studio. A response to the prompt: "Make something invisible."

Sensorium is the "sum of an organism's perception."
I.
Icositetrahedron

Our perceptions of the world around us are grounded in three dimensional space, yet the exploration of theoretical physics and string theory suggest otherwise. This sculpture is a three dimensional representation of a four dimensional object, the "icositetrahedron." We cannot perceive the fourth dimension- so the work serves as an orthogonal projection of the imperceptible state.
When four dimensional shapes are represented, they are often animated in a basic rotation. The use of mirrors facilitates this movement without the use of animation, and alludes to the complexity of a dimension beyond our understanding.
II.
Infinite Regress

The notion of infinity cannot be fully understood. When one thinks of inifinity, we often think of multiplied forms or the vastness of space. This sculpture creates illusions of infinite space and variety. Planes of visible perception are repeated in numerous places, with mirrors serving as a multiplying tool.
As stated above, the Icositetrahedron acts as a projection of the fourth dimension- so too does this work act as a shade of infinity.
III.
Immaterial

The last work will not be revealed. It is a third sculpture created to represent invisibility, and, like the other objects, was placed in the studio space for critique at the completion of the project. It is still in that room, hidden carefully amongst all other visual elements so as to be undiscovered. The focus of this final work is not to show "nothing" and treat it as "a creation of something invisible." It is to recognize that I have created something that is unknowable. The object, which could be essentially anything, is not seen. The viewer is given a lack of knowledge, and it is this unknown knowledge that is perceptibly invisible.
