Bas Otten DDM2A Mural Exam

- Bas Otten DDM2A Mural Exam proces -

For the exam we were given the choice of three buildings, each of these buildings had a wall that needed a mural. So the assignment was to research all of the buildings and then choose one of them based on your research. Than, using that research, we were supposed to design the mural.
- Research -

- De Botanist – Bar and kitchen (Breda)
what is the building used for: bar
which city: Breda
what is nearby: a permanently closed clothing store, a restaurant, McDonald's, a shopping mall, a cinema, a casino and more
site: https://debotanistbreda.nl/
about the building: After obtaining city rights in 1252, the Lord of Breda, Jan van Polanen, started in 1333 with the construction of a stone city wall. The oval-shaped city was given three city gates, including the Tolbrugpoort. This gate and city wall was demolished in the middle of the 15th century and the building De Trapkes, where the Botanist is located, was built on the foundation. Archaeological work has exposed this foundation in the basement and a view from the restaurant has been created through which the old road and underside of the Tolbrugtoren can be seen
- Jazz Bar Eindhoven
what is the building used for: it used to be a nightclub, nowadays it is a Asian cocktail bar
which city: Eindhoven
what is nearby: The Philips Museum, several restaurants, a church, de Bijenkorf, MediaMarkt, two cinemas, clothing stores, a shopping center, etc.
site: https://jazzbar-eindhoven.nl/
about the building: The night club (music club, discotheque, disco club or simply club) is an entertainment venue during the night consisting of the dance floor, light show and a stage for live music or a disc jockey playing recorded music. Nightclubs generally restrict access to people in terms of age, clothing, personal belongings and inappropriate behavior. (the Jazzbar is permanently closed, nowadays it is a Asian cocktail bar which for obvious reasons also has age restricted access)
- Gemeentekantoor / Stadswinkel Tilburg
what is the building used for: office/shop
which city: Tilburg
what is nearby: an Albert Heijn, a shop for art supplies, a restaurant, a parking garage, a mosque, a train station
site: https://www.tilburg.nl/contact/stadswinkels/
about the building: The renovation of the Town Hall on Stadhuisplein was completed in February 2021. The renovated Town Hall is an inviting place where Tilburgers, entrepreneurs, partners and the municipality can meet and work together. It is also the workplace of the council, the council and a large part of the employees of the municipality. The renovation started in December 2018. BAM Bouw en Techniek was responsible for it. The design is by DEDRIE architects and the interior design by Common Affairs. Various monumental elements of the original building have been preserved. That building dates from 1972, and was designed by Kraaijv anger Architects at the time
- ideas -

The next step was coming up with ideas for sketches, I came up with a few for each building

De Botanist
- a drawing of what the building used to look like
- a lot of plants
- something using the man of gold standing inside
- something inspired by James Bond that fits with the bar theme
- a sunset or sunrise

Jazzbar Eindhoven
- a collage of famous DJs or jazz musicians
- Something about PSV to reference the city
- Something that has to do with the church opposite, a stained glass idea for example
- Music notes
- A pretty woman to catch the attention of young adults (maybe in the GTA artstyle)

Gemeentekantoor / Stadswinkel Tilburg
- Donkey Kong
- the windows form a kind of staircase, maybe I can do something with that
- snakes and ladders
- a hamster from the Albert Heijn commercials
- Concept sketches -

I was still unsure of which building I wanted to continue with so I made a few sketches for all of them

For the first sketch I went with the obvious choice of drawing plants on the side of the building (I forgot to take more pictures whilst making it)
Afterwards I went with the sunset/sunrise idea
I then moved on to the building in Tilburg, I went with the Hamster drawing. I ended up not continuing with this one even though I liked this one a lot. It is more of an add than a mural however which is why I decided to not go on with this one
I then moved on to the jazzbar and went with the idea of the woman but quickly dropped the idea as it wasn't very realistic especially in this day and age
I realised that I was spending too much time on my sketches so the final one Isn't as detailed as the others. However it is the one I carried on with, It is the Donkey Kong idea and after showing the teacher I landed on the idea of changing the Donkey Kong concept a bit to reference the Kruikezeiker, which is a famous statue in Tilburg
- Research (Kruikezeiker) -

After doing some research to the statue and some other statues in Tilburg. I ended up replacing Donkey Kong with Kruikezeiker himself, Mario will be replaced by the Lopende Man and instead of holding a hammer he is holding the Staande Hartvorm, lastly Pauline is replaced by Schrijvertje. All of these are statues in Tilburg but Kruikezeiker is the most popular, so popular in fact that the city is named after it during Carnaval. During Carnaval Tilburgs name is temporarily changed to Kruikenstad

- Proces final product -

Now with all of the info I've gathered I could start working on the finished product

First off: the sketch, instead of using the same level I drew for the original idea sketch, I decided to go with the very first level as it is the most recognisable (the black squares are where the windows are situated on the building)
Next up I did the outer lines, I went with a simpler artstyle than I usually do to match the Donkey Kong artstyle more
Then came the colouring, the colours are the same as in Donkey Kong, since the other statues don't have colours (at least not that I could find), the only one I could find a coloured version of was Kruikezeiker himself. So Lopende Man and Schrijvertje are in the colours of Mario and Pauline
I then remade the Donkey Kong logo to say Kruikenstad instead
- Final product -
- Reflection -

Due to some personal stuff I ended up lacking behind with all subjects not just this one so I had to do most of the work in my weekends, because of this I feel like my end result could've been better but I simply ran out of time to make it better. Despite it being out of my control I think I still managed to create and hand in something finished instead of half finished which was my main concern
