When coming up for the sketches for this project, I wanted to try my best to create different compositions that would be appealing to the people looking at them. I did not want to represent Mars as some desolate planet- instead, I wanted to focus on the ideas of exploration, wonder, relaxation, and paradise, much like most vacations are, but of course, much more exotic.
I decided to go with something that felt more retro to me, using colors reminiscent of the '50s (teal, red, etc.) and I decided to go with showing a fully developed city skyline in the background, along with flying ships, and Earth and the Moon in the sky. I wanted to create something that felt almost extraterrestrial, yet still homey and familiar.
Putting my project on a billboard mockup inside of a station helped me visualize what it would look like to other people and how they would see it.
Mockups can be incredibly helpful for an artist to visualize what their work will look like in certain places- I would definitely recommend trying out mockups to see how your work would look like in a public setting.
