John Lewis iPad app
Set up in-house research lab and conduct rapid usability testing
Project background
John Lewis engaged with Tigerspike to design their brand-new iPad app. As part of the UX team, my role as UX researcher involved running weekly, rapid usability testing from early sketches to high-fidelity designs.

Research objectives
The purpose of this research project was to provide a quick evaluation of the usability testing conducted on the wireframes and mockups to inform the design team through the design cycle.

The aim of the user testing was to discover errors and areas of improvement in order to present recommendations for immediate and future implementation.

What I did
I set up a usability testing mobile lab inside Tigerspike's office to provide a cost-effective way to include frequent user feedback loops in the design cycle. The product team and stakeholders observed sessions live from a different room, where they could see directly the screen interactions and the participant in the room. I used UX recorder software to record sessions for later analysis.
Weekly, iterative usability testing was conducted at Tigerspike's lab to gather user insights, evaluate the usability of the work in progress and validate design decisions to inform the design cycle.

After the usability sessions, I had debrief sessions with the client and our team to agree on following actions for the current and future sprints. High-level, weekly usability reports with recommendations were part of the deliverables.

The weekly usability reports included:
– A description of the testing process
– An overview of the participants’ profiles (3 participants/week)
– An analysis of major findings
– A summary of recommendations to improve the product
