Deal With the Devil
Deal with the Devil is a three-play theater season for the Old Globe, the historic theater company located in Balboa Park. It is known for its high-quality productions, with emphasis on more traditional dramatic pieces. With the Deal with the Devil Summer Season, the Old Globe hoped to create a provocative approach to three of these more traditional plays. The season primarily targets male and female theater-goers. This season is unique in that it draws on the Devil himself for its elements and structure, and holds the mailer as the lynchpin of the brand. The palette is crimson and black, drawing not only on more traditional infernal colors, but creating the implication of dried blood and shadow. Type is solved with Last Kings Quest, a humanistic display script, for the season logotype, as well as to create hierarchy in the copy. Body copy is Adobe Garamond Pro, for its age, and to compliment the unorthodox display face with a more traditional one. The mailer itself is a long, rolling scroll, mailed in a tube wreathed in flame, with inspiration drawn from the Faustian contract. A William Morris illustration features prominently in both the scroll and the response card, retouched to bring in the palette, while a weathered paper texture provides the appearance of age which lends authenticity to the scroll. The response card is a simple postcard, giving a subtle, modern, tongue-in-cheek tilt to the piece, with “a postcard from Hell.”
