Meteorite Impact Zone
Data visualization

This project was for my Information Graphics unit which was focusing on Data Visualization. We had to find a data source of our choice and from there we had to create a visualization representation of that data source.

Whilst looking at my Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasure’s album cover and quickly decided I wanted to push and try for a 3D model or something you could feel, where all my other class mates were doing posters or something digital.

Armed with my research and inspiration, I quickly came to the idea of plotting all the meteorite landing zones throughout Australia. I wanted to portray that visually with a metaphoric target for whatever the universe can throw at us, leaving their marks and indentations in a metal sheet. The impact zones were rounded up to the nearest kilometer, and all landing zones were scaled slightly larger (but in proportion) for a greater emphasis for the final execution.

This project greatly enlightened my love for data visualization. With the way this prototype came out with a simple process of mapping out an illustrator map, laser cutting a wooden mold, melting some perspex and pushing some screw heads into the sheet marked with the laser cutting machine. With a larger budget, I would have had executed metal moulds and used a 3D printer process for greater accuracy, but I was very happy with the result
