League of Women Voters GOTV Campaign

In collaboration with my Design for Social Impact course at Eastern Washington University and the League of Women Voters, I was asked to create a poster campaign to encourage Gen-Z voter registration and turnout in the fall of 2022. The final deliverables consisted of a print poster, a TV display, and an Instagram post, all of which became public domain and were displayed across EWU's campuses.

Research
I created a system map to pinpoint the major friction points and barriers that prevent people from voting. After reading articles and discussing the problem with local elections professionals, LWV volunteers, and my classmates, I decided to focus my campaign on spreading awareness about voting resources and to make voting as easy as possible.

Background
The US is a large country where election systems vary across states and even counties. There are many places where voting is tedious and time-consuming. Washington state has been ahead of the curve, voting by mail for decades. In recent years, Washington has been developing the votewa.gov site, essentially serving as a one-stop shop for all voting needs. This isn't common knowledge, which is what I hoped to solve with this campaign.

Design Process
I was inspired by public health PSAs from the previous few years. Bright colors, simple shapes, fun easy-to-read fonts, and a snappy slogan.
I knew I wanted the slogan to be topical and to match the timely familiarity of a COVID PSA. "Work from home" was a buzzword at the time, and I added "most important" to the beginning to frame voting as a priority.
I also wanted the campaign to be informative and not just rhetorical. I wanted viewers to learn something instead of just briefly thinking about voting as a concept. For those who were pulled in by the slogan, I added secondary information and a call to action with the QR code, which leads to votewa.gov. I separated some of the things you can do on the hub into bite-sized bubbles and spread them throughout the house from the top floor to the mailbox, highlighting that the entire process of voting in Washington, from registration to confirming that your vote was counted, can be completed without leaving home.
