Little Death - Shen Xinyi, Shan Xinyu, Huang Xibing

Inspiration
Our theme is about the little matter of death.

We were inspired by the fact that most people nowadays are very fearful and resistant to death and do not want to talk about it.

In China there are still traditional funerals, where people wear black clothes, look sad, mourn the deceased and send chrysanthemums. But some funerals abroad are like a party, where the funeral is just a reason to bring the living together.
We want to show that death is something that everyone goes through, that it's just a stage of life, a normal thing.

We created an immersive space with lines, light and sound. From entering this space, people can immerse themselves in the experience, and feel the process of life before, death and after death.
Material
We mainly use lines to form our entire space. The lines form a space, representing human life.
We also used fishing line through the line. Finally, with scissors, the line is cut one by one as the life of a little bit of the passage, and then only the fishing line still exists. Just as people die but still live on in another way.
When a shadow is formed on a projection line, it means a shadow is formed by living.
Immersive Space Video
Immersive Space Explanation
At first, you will see yourself in front of the computer and project it onto the line, which is the first step to immerse yourself in the space, allowing new visitors to examine yourself. It's also more immersive.

The first act expresses us in the vast universe. We gather many things in the universe into a single point, which becomes each of us.

This represents the sun. In our first impression, the sun represents what people can only see when they are alive, and the changing sun represents every change in life. The sun is uncertain, the same as our day is not the same.

The Chinese always say that flowers bloom and fall, all have there time, so we use the element of flowers and the effect of the undulating flowers, to illustrate the concept that we need to use the creatures in nature to better see our own life, to understand the meaning of our life and death.

The last scene is the waterfall. When the water falls down, it also shows the loss of time in the end. Life is like water, which can not return in the past. We need to cherish every day, even if it passes immediately. The mountains and rivers here represent our life.

In the beginning we said that we become a point, and this represents that after death we begin to spread out from the point.

In the last part, we changed the shadow to the wall, which means that we will have no shadow after death, but flowers will dissipate and reunite, flowers may become petals into the earth, giving birth to new plants, and trees are the same. They keep repeating themselves in the form of fallen leaves, which also shows that people will always exist in another form. And then it goes back out into the universe, and it comes together again.
Immersive Space Voice Explanation
This is a time when people accept the beginning of a person's life. The video shows the person's life forming a complete circle, symbolizing the cycle of life. The music gradually builds up as particles come together.

The video immerses the viewer in this circular world, filled with images of circles, and the music fades out, creating a sense of entering a whirlpool of life.
People are still present, experiencing the beauty of this time with their physical bodies. The music becomes slightly more upbeat to reflect this.

The clock in the beginning hint at the approaching end of life, and the later section of music repeats the beginning, foreshadowing that life is about to enter a cycle and death is near.

The opening water drop represents the precursor to death, while the waterfall symbolizes its proximity. The projection ends, and the music returns to a calm state, signifying death.

Only then does the music become more relaxed and pleasant. One enters the world after death, which is not sad but peaceful, existing in a different form.
In this state, the music becomes cheerful, reflecting the joy of the person after death.

The last section overlaps with the beginning, but with the addition of both upbeat and ethereal music. This signifies the world after death, where life enters another cycle.
Product Explanation
he next product is a series of three items: a poster, a postcard, and a brochure. The poster depicts the installation through a drawing, with a shadow representing the physical presence of the human body. Rainbow threads are used to convey the idea that death is not cold and should not be feared.

The postcard serves as a souvenir for exhibition. The front provides essential exhibition information, while the back illustrates three interactions. The first interaction involves the viewer seeing themselves in the projection, immersing them in the upcoming performance. The second involves an Arduino, allowing the viewer to start their journey when they choose. The third interaction involves a pair of scissors, inviting the viewer to cut the threads slightly, symbolizing the passing of life.

The booklet showcases sketches of the installation in a raised and recessed format. The front highlights inspiration, preparation, and sketches, while the back showcases the construction process and references.
