Yahan Kya Hai: a guide to the Parsis of Karachi

The Foundations of Karachi
In the context of Karachi, the concept of a "settler city" is shaped by the influence of British colonialism and its aftermath on the city's development. Personal narratives and local histories reveal the multifaceted nature of migration and the collective identity found in Karachi, showcasing its remarkable diversity.

However, mainstream Pakistani history fails to shed light on the presence and contributions of various communities, particularly marginalized groups. Among these communities, the Parsis of Karachi stand out as "the guardians of the indispensable trinity of wealth, high culture, and social capital." These components create an aura of mystery surrounding the Parsis, whose invaluable contributions to the foundation of Karachi are numerous. While this project focuses on exploring Parsi contributions, it was important to recognize that the team approached this topic as outsiders, interested only in its relevance to the urban landscape of Karachi. Figures such as Nusserwanjee, Cowasjee, Dinshaw, and Avari have played pivotal roles in shaping Karachi's current outlook and experiences, though they are often portrayed more as founding settlers rather than through the lens of the Parsi community.

The Parsis have a lasting legacy of establishing familial structures that foster progress, healing, and community building. Educational institutions like Mama Parsi, NED University, and BVS, as well as hospitals like Lady Dufferin, are notable examples of their contributions. During the British colonial era, Parsis, driven by their adoption of Western education and engagement in social work, played a significant role in reform, enlightenment, and progress on the subcontinent. Unbeknownst to many, their intellectual depth and understanding allowed them to integrate with the British quickly, acting as intermediaries between the locals and the colonial rulers. Therefore, our research (taken over the course of 5 weeks and more) aimed to shed light on communities that have been overlooked rather than entirely excluded, but were integral to shaping Karachi's identity as a settler city.
