Loss of InnocenceSylvia McElroy AW12
Dressing up plays a pivotal part in childhood, we had once envisioned ourselves walking in our parents shoes. Fascinated by pushing the boundary of dressing up to the point where the line between role playing and reality is blurred, I started to explore the idea of innocence and how children are often catapulted into the world of adult at a young age. Moreover in the present days we can no longer view children outer beauty as a sign of spotless inner lives, stripping them off the ideal stereotypes. In particular the young brides and the street children who had to step into their parent’s shoes in both literal and metaphorical sense, taking over their responsibilities. My fascination with the young brides had led me to research travelers custom of young marriage within the community, in particular their ostentatious and oversized wedding dresses, living their childhood dream. Taking reference from the oversized garments the children worn had inspired me to create a collection of garments which are played out of proportion , padded to give bulbous oversized silhouette which will engulf the wearer, reminiscence of wearing adults clothes as a child.
