Dark Souls inspired UI

As a fan of the Dark Souls video game series, I felt inspired to create a game menu UX using artwork from the game Dark Souls 3.

Besides the standard UI elements usually featured in video game menus, I've picked a feature that's very alien to the series for the sake of experimenting with how it would fit the game's aesthetics: an in-game store.

As a designer, this was a quick exercise to practise Figma's interactive components and prototyping tools, and to familiarize myself with the flow of video game UIs.

All artworks used are copyright of BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc.

The Dark Souls game series are known for their dark fantasy environments, contrasting beautiful medieval architecture with nightmarish creatures.

Having defined the game's aesthetics, I felt that the UI also needed to fit the same fantasy.

A serif typeface with a golden touch complemented the game's royal medieval art direction. I used Harriet Text as the primary typeface:

To introduce a subtle contrast within the UI's typography, I used the sans-serif font Inter Black  exclusively for the UI's navigation:

To further push the medieval theme, ornaments and stylized frames were used as decorative elements:

Having decided to use the game's concept art as backdrops for the UI, I had to use a subtle black gradient overlay to provide enough contrast.

Here's a demo that brings it all together to sum up this section:

Taking a step back from the aesthetics, below is the initial wireframe, followed by the polished design. Finally, I included a Figma prototype to preview the flow of the experience.
