European Football AR

Augmented Reality Design
European Football
Brief:
This graphic design assignment is to apply design principles and augmented reality production techniques to develop an immersive augmented reality experience. The project involves conducting thorough research, creating a design, and producing an AR experience that includes a physical printed sticker, augmented reality content, and audio. The ultimate objective of the project is to develop design skills while engaging with emerging technologies in a graphic design context.

The project's primary goal is to investigate the possibilities of using the back of laptops and other sticker placement locations as platforms for communication and engagement, leveraging AR technology. Through engagement with emerging technologies and an iterative design process, valuable experience designing for new mediums and creating compelling interactive experiences will be gained.

Challenge:
For this AR project I wanted to use the sticker to inform Americans about European soccer, or football, as they say. European Football is something most Americans don't pay attention to, except for maybe the World Cup. I wanted to have an immersive AR experience that would give a brief overview on players, the five biggest leagues, and well known teams. This will hopefully get people interested in looking into the sport more, whether that be to watch it or just to keep up with it.

Role:

Application Equipment:
Adobe Illustrator, Artivive, Artivive Mobile App

Client:
Classroom Project
Sticker

For the sticker that would be scanned to reveal the AR experience I went with a pretty simple design that I feel still catches the eye. It has a badge over a soccer ball that has the text 'Scan Here' on it. The Big Five at the top represents the top five leagues in Europe: Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, and Serie A. The badge roughly comes from how the player cards look on the game EA Fifa Sports. I figured if Americans were gonna know anything about soccer it might start from Fifa. However, it doesn't just have to represent that. In Europe teams, or clubs, don't have logos, instead they have crests or badges, so it can work for that as well. The three white stripes in the background are meant to mimic the Adidas logo which is a popular brand for soccer.

The sticker leaned against a soccer ball for extra emphasis on the sport. I chose a grass field because it was the closest thing to soccer field I was going to get.

Reflection
In the end this project was a really fun and unique experience. I've never worked augmented reality before and there was definitely some challenges and learning curves but overall it went alright. I think my AR experience ended up doing a good job of communicating quick facts about European football without being boring or confusing. Hopefully it will encourage those who can to learn more about it!
