The word 'Yokai' covers a wide range of mystical creatures from Japanese folklore: bizarre supernatural creatures, bloodthirsty demons, melancholic ghosts, and even mischievous objects that come to life, as well as weird animals and people.
In a word, it includes everything that is unexplainable, mysterious, and thrilling.
When I first discovered this phenomenon, I was captivated by these creatures and decided to make a book about them. Together with my team and experts in Japanese culture, I've compiled an illustrated encyclopedia about this phenomenon. Each article is accompanied by illustrations specially created for the project by various amazing artists. This book is a result of collaboration with over 40 illustrators from Russia and Ukraine.
The first part of the book includes a general article about the Yokai phenomenon and how it manifests in Japanese culture. The second part consists of 44 articles about specific monsters, handpicked for their fascinating qualities. What makes these articles even more engaging is the diverse range of artistic styles and techniques used in the illustrations, making each entry a visually captivating journey into the world of Yokai.
