    A piece of furniture to re-educate people on the life cycle of our objects.
The purpose of this project was to design an innovative, sustainable home appliance or furniture piece that reuses end-of-life products as raw materials.
A design proposal was created that would educate the user to re-think the way products are consumed. The principle of‘re-design’ was used to create an object that would demonstrate to the consumer that products at the end of their valued use may have new value in a second life as a different product. End-of life products have the potential to be raw materials for a generation of future products.
The parameters of the project were that the solution had to be designed in a fashion that would be taken seriously, while also representing the re-used “end-of-life” objects.

The following room divider and storage unit was the end product.

The furniture piece incorporated the use of the following end-of-life products:

1.  Reused bicycle frames
·     Re-using bicycle frames provide a material that people can relate too. The frames are cleaned and polished to give a professional finish/satin steel

2.    Reused metal tubing
·     The tubing can be taken from any pipes found at a junkyard, which match the size requirements. The inside is a waterproof container. The container shows the level of water inside so the consumer knowswhen to re-fill.

3.    Reused hose
·     The hoses are taken from car’s engine in scrapyards. The hose are used to feed water to the hydroponic plant container (exhaust pipes.) The other hose is used to regulate the level of water in theexhaust pipe.

4.    Reused industrial safety netting
·     The safety netting is used to divide rooms, living quarters, or office. The secondary applications are to grow plants and to store newspapers. The netting also has the potential to fit user-specific functions as the user explores its form through use.

5.    Scrapile lumber
·     SCRAPILE is a solution from designers BartBettencourt and Carlos Salgado to create a positive environmental impact. They have developed a unique method of collecting and re-using discarded scraps of wood from New York’s woodworking industry.

6.    Reused exhaust pipes
·     The exhaust pipes are reused to become a hydroponicplant feeder. The hydroponic container holds the vermiculate and the plant at a constant level of water. This process enable the plants to grow to a certain level independently from the user.
