Master Copy After Fongwei Liu

THE GOAL: In order to improve my technical skill with oil paintings, I decided to study the technique of an artist I admire through a Master Copy. I used an oil portrait by Fongwei Liu as a reference. In doing this, I was able to learn how to better utilize brushstrokes to imply texture, as well as mixing transitional tones instead of blending on the canvas. I learned how to make each brushstroke have a purpose, and to have subtle tonal variations throughout the painting.

After taking this progress picture (left), I realized I needed to darken the background and the purple on his tunic. I also lowered the value of the shadows, as well as cool off the highlights.
