Perpetual Pet Project: Dacia 1410 Sport

This is one of two pet projects I have currently in progress both in the real world and the virtual world.
It all revolves around this old Dacia 1410 Sport I got for almost free and currently restoring.
I used a combination of 3d modeling software to build a 3d model that would serve as a way to previsualize the final look for the real world car when it's finished and eventually be ready to be added to various games that support modding.
I'll keep adding to this project as times goes on.
I took advantage of the worn matte paint and took loads of picture which I loaded into Autodesk's 123D Catch to get this rough 3d scan. This allowed me to model the car to real world proportions without precise 3d blueprints.
Next up I built a very efficient 3d model taking advantage of Maya's new vertex normal weighting settings that allow for very good looking hard surfaces with a lot less bevels than before.
I them modeled a bunch of wheels and swap-able parts that can be found on other models of the Dacia 1300/1410 range. I added a roll-cage fiber-glass over-fenders which I also bought for the real car.
These first two renders are made in Mental Ray using the sIBL plugins and free hdri maps available on their website: http://www.hdrlabs.com/sibl/index.html
This latest reincarnation will probably not be carried over to the real car yet I couldn't resist adding a Renault 5 Turbo - inspired body kit and wheels to see how it would look like on the Dacia. Not too bad actually!
