Books Against Bans is a non-profit organization concept dedicated to promoting the importance of free speech and fighting against censorship in the literary world. Their primary goals are raising awareness and providing resources to young readers who are vulnerable to censorship and book bans in their area. These resources include digital and print materials, online library cards, free eBooks, and a simple guide to writing to the leadership in their communities–from school board members to state and federal representatives.

This project involved the creation of an illustrated character that could connect with their younger audience through bright colors, an adventurous demeanor, and an air of compassion. The character would be used as a brand asset to help spread awareness on social media, in poster designs for local rallies and protests, on marketing collateral, and more.

Introducing: Darwin the Frog, a reading warrior for Books Against Bans. Her name is derived from Charles Darwin, whose On the Origins of Species is regarded as one of the most banned scientific books. Her passion comes from her ever-present desire to read and learn. As a result, she uses her voice to help fan the flames of curiosity and knowledge. Darwin helps Books Against Bans as they continue to educate teenagers and young readers on the importance of reading, while offering resources for their involved with anti-censorship campaigns and access books in spite of the ostensive overreach of their local government and school districts.
