TACTUM EX MACHINAE

Industrial Design
TACTUM EX MACHINAE
HAS BEEN TOUCHED UPON BY THE MACHINE
The industrial revolution sees the concept of the machine as something disembodied, automatic, a mechanised robot without personality. With the ability to produce designs at a large scale both quickly and cheaply this means of production has become dominant in today’s society. The mechanised uniformity of these designs is a direct result of this production method that renders designs without any individual character.

By subverting the concept of machine, the machine in TACTUMEX MACHINAE is quite different. This machine is the crocheter who injects their personality through pattern and technique into the object. This individual touch can never be replicated precisely, ensuring that each outcome is an individual expression of the crocheter.

The integration of both new and old technologies has been harmonised in the production of TACTUM EX MACHINAE in order to find a balance between the philosophies of industrialisation and the arts and crafts.
