Origami - Dionne Candice Hodgson
Making origami out of photographs folds the image into a shape, hiding certain fragments of the picture and making the other fragments more dimensional and appear to be more of an important portion of the picture. Taking inspiration from the classic art movement self expressionism- attempting to depict not objective reality but rather the subjective emotions and responses that objects and events arouse in oneself, accomplishing expressing emotions through distortion and exaggeration.   According to traditional Japanese and Chinese culture, different types of origami, more specifically animal origami, possess different traits and symbolise different meanings of life. Selecting a photograph that holds symbolic meaning and creating a specific origami animal that possesses a meaning similar to the selected photograph creates a durable connection between the two. Constructing an origami animal out of a photograph that corresponds with the meaning plays a strong role in expressing my emotions through not only my photographs, but also the folding of an image and paper.

"You can fold a simple quadrilateral paper into any shape as you want. I wished to fold the laws of nature, the dignity of life, and the expression of affection into my work…folding life is difficult, because life is a shape or an appearance caught in a moment, and we need to feel the whole of natural life to fold one moment."
(From Joseph Wu’s Origami page)
