Two Jays Tarot Project
Series of Paintings for Tarot Card Set
Two Jays Illustration is the title of a collaboration between myself and Joe Kennedy. My partner and I decided to start a project to work on our skills as storytellers and fine art painters. We agreed on a style of execution and format, and also that we will stick to completing just the Major Arcana as a kind of collectors' set. Below you will find my process for completing the first painting of the set.

Cleaned up sketch from thumbnail.
This is a typical color study done in Photoshop. I scan in my sketch at the final size and proceed to paint over top of it. I prefer to complete my final images in traditional mediums, but I always start with a color study digitally. It's much easier to fool around with values, lighting, and color schemes on the computer.
Final painting of "The Chariot" for Two Jays Tarot. Oil on Illustration Board, 8x12".
There's lots of textures and fun things that happen when you paint with oils. I prefer them over acrylic because their vibrance and color stays true throughout the process of painting to the finish. It takes me about a week to complete a painting like this, and it may require only a few days worth of drying time before I can scan it without lifting any paint off. If you have any questions, please feel free to leave me a comment. :)
