The iPhone 15 Pro Max will feature many major upgrades, especially in the camera department. Cameras have become one of the key criteria for high-end smartphones. That’s why manufacturers have been investing heavily in this area.

After equipping the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max with 48MP sensors, Apple is now working hard to bring other significant improvements to the next generation of iPhones. According to a recent MacRumors article, the iPhone 15 Pro Max will have a “periscope lens” that will “double the optical zoom capability”.

Why is adding a periscope lens such a big deal for mobile photography enthusiasts? Because this technology allows more light to travel through the camera module and enables greater optical zoom. For comparison, the current maximum for iPhones is 3x. So, MacRumors expects the iPhone 15 Pro Max to have “5–6x optical zoom”. 

Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that the size of the protruding camera bump on the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be reduced. Most reports indicate that the camera module will grow in size once again.

The periscope lens will set the iPhone 15 Pro Max apart not only from the standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus , but also from its smaller sibling — the iPhone 15 Pro. This could mean that Apple is creating more differentiation between Pro and Pro Max. It could also mean that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be renamed as the iPhone 15 Ultra when it launches.

Even though we are looking forward to the iPhone 15 Ultra this year, most rumors suggest that the periscope lens will only be available on the 6.7-inch premium iPhone, at least for the near future. In other words, an iPhone 16 Ultra with a focus on the camera is probably in the works. Let’s wait and see what happens!
