Explottens Trailer - Storyboard & Illustration

Storyboard and Illustration for Explottens Trailer
PROJECT TYPE: STORYBOARD, ILLUSTRATION
PROJECT DURATION: JUNE 2018 - AUGUST 2018

OVERVIEW
About the Project
I worked on this project during my time at we.R.play, a game development studio based in Islamabad, Pakistan.

The goal was to create an illustrated trailer, narrating the back-story for Explottens, an arcade-style, indie video game. The trailer consisted of simple 2D animations and was featured on Apple Arcade with the game’s debut on the platform.

MY ROLE
Concepts, Storyboards, Illustrations and Learning
I worked with a team of digital artists, motion design artists and project managers to create storyboard thumbnails, sketches, digital illustrations and assets for the animations.

The project started with a fellow artist and I pitching the storyboard thumbnails based on the content and guidelines provided. The best ones were shortlisted and we proceeded to flesh them out into sketches. Once a style was finalised, we followed it for all the panels. I painted the background scenes in Photoshop and created the characters in Illustrator in a 2D vector style and used a puppet format for animation.

THUMBNAILS
Creating the Storyboard and Thumbnails
I worked with a fellow artist on creating the thumbnails for the storyboard. We shared various reiterations of the scenes, covering the different aspects of the story. The final versions were selected by the project managers, and we then proceeded on to sketching.
Thumbnail sketches for the storyboard.
SKETCHES
Sketching it all out
After deciding on the final style, sketches were created for all of the panels using Photoshop and Procreate.

FINAL PRODUCT
Explottens Trailer
The background scenes were painted in Photoshop while the characters were created in Illustrator in a 2D vector style and a puppet format for animation. This is how the final versions turned out:
