UW-HCDE: Spective color picker

Tony Scauzillo-Golden is the creator of the Spective Color System. He formed the Spective Color group with HCDE students to take a user-centered design approach to color selection systems. This group project aims to improve the usability of color selection systems by providing users with a clear structure that weighs colors equally and makes it fast and easy to pick the right color for their project. My role in this group was to help create a user research kit, design user interfaces, prepare, and deliver a presentation for the Matt Shobe Award in Spring 2011.
Problem
Across industry, there is not a clear standard in color selection user interfaces. Apple has five different native color selectors. Similarly, Microsoft and Adobe have a wide variety of different color selectors. All of these color selectors differ from another across multiple platforms and applications. Picking the right color is a challenge and is very time consuming because of all inconsistencies in portraying and structuring colors.

Objective
Create an organized color system that reduces the cognitive memory load on users while simplifying the selection process. Write a UCD paper and present findings to the Shobe Award committee in hopes of a $10,000 grant.

My Contribution
* Co-managed the team
* The idea of a resolution and lightness slider to the original design.
* Wireframes and comps for an Apple OS color selector.
* Created an iPad Photoshop comp and artifact to demonstrate feasibility.
* Analysis of Spective Colour system for trends and color relationships.
* Color Theory Poster based on a Paper Leaf Designs Color poster
