NEW YORK RYTHM

Few time ago, nobody though it was feasible to create an artwork where different styles work together. The artwork entitled “New York Rythms” demonstrates it is possible. The idea is to mix genres in order to offer to the painting a new field of investigation. In this genre mix, this is the narrative facet of the artwork that creates balance. That is why, this movement is named Storytelling art : a story to tell will always be the foundation of a great painting. Disconnecting the narrative part from the real part seems to me being the only possibility of innovation for the painting, so let’s open to imagination!
Why, in the heart of an artwork, cannot we express different ideas, using different graphic styles and different pictorial techniques?
In this artwork, the audience sinks first into the crowd, painted in a realistic way with elegant women and businessmen in a hurry. While the eye seems to go to the top center of the canvas, following the advertisements on TIMESQUARE’s buildings, it is literally hit by two abstract figures supposed to represent New York policemen. One of them brandishes an Iphone in which we can distinguish a picture made from the illustration style (graphically simple and powerful). Behind, we make out some figures without faces, wearing bowler hats who are meant to be the banksters (bankers + gangsters). Below, a three compartment system borrowed from comics, talks about some previous events, mixing abstraction and realism.
The message inside the bubble, delivered by these two policemen, says that in New York city, a banking debauch place, it is better to have LA COMITIVE (name of a secret organization of protectors and title of the story I’m telling) by our side.
The story is settled, and the audience can proceed into this artwork. Its imagination and sensitivity will fill in the blanks left on purpose. One last detail on the top, on the advertising board, shout at the audience, asking: “Do you stay longer in front of a PICASSO or in front of a FERRERO?”. Some of you will see a vanity from me, but the others will understand that the painter that I am is ready to take up the challenge started by the master, not the one about recognition, but the one about innovation.
The story used as a medium for my artwork is entitled “Once upon a time, LA COMITIVE”, which means CLAN in Italian. The main characters are: Lisa L’Aventura (American and Monegasque), rich heiress, redoubtable businesswoman, Michael Spencer Percival alias Duke (English), former trader and Marcello di Cordoba (Argentinian), professional polo player, defender of the squires in Argentine. These characters form a secret organization which struggle against the financial drifts and some terrible banksters. The story takes place between New York and Monaco. It looks like history, lived by human beings, stark, rough and delicious at the same time. Taking the art lovers in a graphic adventure that they can follow through characters I created and seize with their own life is the project I propose. It is a simple idea, but it opens a huge way of new possibilities for painting.
