A data visualisation produced for International Women's Day highlighting the underrepresentation of women in the world's national parliaments across a 10 year period from 2012 to 2021.

Taking inspiration from the UK suffrage movement active during the early 20th century, the central design is that of a purple and green rosette - a modernised interpretation of those handed out by Emmeline and Sylvia Pankhurst during their landmark “Votes for Women” campaign. This serves as a subtle but important reminder that despite the achingly slow progress of the last decade, we will continue to fight for gender parity.

BACKGROUND
_

In the wake of this year’s high profile political resignations from Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Arden, I wanted to shine a spotlight on the role accurate gender representation has in shaping democracy.

Although not the explicit cause for their respective resignations, a pervasive culture of harassment, deeply rooted in misogyny, followed both world leaders throughout their time in office. This abuse is unfortunately regarded as par for the course for women in the political sphere and one of many factors deterring women from public office.

Using data supplied by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) this data viz delves into the participation figures.
