This documentary was enriching in the sense that it exposed the audience to themes that are taboo. I really like the way that Mapplethorpe approached themes such as sexuality with such fluidity and confidence. His pictures brings us back to when nudity was considered graceful and powerful. This artist reminds us of the power that art has to create social change by questioning the norms, or how something as simple as following your instinct can be moving and maybe even be considered a rebellious act. This documentary brought to my attention the way that culture is a moving target, and while some things might be completely normal, and even encouraged during a time, they might receive an opposite response during another time. As an artist it is important to follow your intuition and to believe in the work you are making, because even if you don't see the results during your lifetime, your art could change the world.
