Airplane Crashes - An Infographic
We hear that airplane is safe and safer every day. What is the progress so far?
I started by looking at the data sources I could process and which data analysis could be done. There were a lot of fragmented sources, including World Bank sources. But there was a lack of one unifying base. Luckily I found the PlaneCrashInfo website. Thanks to their archive maintenance, an analysis was easy to do. These kinds of civil efforts make me happy.
Discovering Data
By simply charting the data, I decided on the binary choice of a timeline-based view or a situational model. A timeline view seemed too detailed, and I wished to eliminate time-series beliefs as much as possible.
Wireframing
This is a graduation project from my Domestika course. It's easy to forgot steps and deep-dive into the details. But consistency comes with a process. Even by taking small steps like wireframing.
🛩 Top-Left: Considering two main charts (decline of the crashes and rise of the flights) as the main objects
🛩 Top-Right: Decreasing the portion of the graphs and combining them vertically with some objects around.
🛩 Bottom-Left: A big graph at the center and post-it notes around
🛩 Bottom-Right: A big 3D illustration, the path of the airplane would be based on the crash count / year graph's shape.
Components
An airplane window would be an excellent object to use. But as its design, it comes up with thick borders because of the safety rules. So framing all of the things with airplane windows was not possible. By deriving the window term, I tried to apply a similar shape, a rounded rectangle. It contributed with the bare minimum to keep the window idea living.
The Pattern
What would be better than the shape of the rise and the decline of the airplane crashes graph? So I utilize this opportunity.
