HEGEMON (ХЕГЕМОН)
Through a series of glass sculptures the work "HEGEMON" explores the human desire to create order, to captivate and to possess.
"HEGEMON" could be interpreted in many ways and doesn't have one certain exegesis. I arranged it a couple of times and every time the sculpture comes out differently depending on the space that it is in, the lighting, the materials that are available to me.
One of the oldest human instincts is to recognize and to classify information. Many centuries ago this helped us with our basic survival - to acknowledge predators, to know which food is good for eating etc. To group information into categories simplifies our complex world and helps us to react quickly and effectively to new experiences. This skill could be translated as the ability and essential wish to find order and create beauty.
Part of the human condition is dealing with the tendency to recognize beauty and the desire to own it. This can be seen not only in our relationship with nature, but with other people and even with ourselves.
"HEGEMON" doesn't give you an answer but rather is trying to evoke questions. With this piece I want to ask the viewer to dive deeper into his relationship with beauty and ask who is the hegemon - the one who is trying to capture and possess beauty or beauty itself?
The creative process behind each sculpture was unique but it always required tranquility, patience and self exploration. While adjusting branches and jars I was constantly reflecting on the matters of creating space and order, captivity and beauty.
