Introduction to Fibers

Nanolandscape
Weaving/loom unit
Minature thread weaving with embroidery and found sticks, 2014
Armadilla
Screen-printing unit
Hand-dyed and screen-printed rayon, 2014
Journal
Accumulation project
Photocopied fabric with journal pages/notes, hand-stitched leather, 2014

I focused on an accumulation of memories. By printing my own personal pages and folding them into forms that must be opened in order to be read, I created a deconstructed journal. It's worn like a shield, similar to how my fabricated memories shield me from others as well as myself. In order to read them, viewers must approach me and break down the physical barrier that separates me from them.
The Manipulator
Tension/compression project
Hand-dyed fabric, wood, wire, gold chains, 2014

I wanted to explore the tension within puppetry (the person who controls the puppet is called the manipulator.) Because the marionette bars are attached to my head, I become the controller as well as the controlled. When I move my arms, they move the bars, which creates conversation about which one is controlling the other. Through this piece, I'm asking myself this question: is it my mind or my actions that dominate my life?
