Textile printing is the process of embellishing textile fabrics with dyes, pigments, or other materials in patterned forms. One of the major styles of textile printing is discharge printing. This technique involves dyeing the cloth with a background color and applying a print paste containing reagents or reducing agents to destroy the background color in a predetermined pattern. The areas where the print paste is applied turn white, resulting in a white design against a colored background.

If the desired result is a colored pattern that differs from the background color and is not white, the print paste will include coloring agents unaffected by the discharging agent. The desired color determines the choice of coloring agent.
