Spilt Aspie - Personal Book about Asperger's Syndrome
A personal project, this collection of thirty-one black and white sprockets is a fresco of Asperger's Syndrome, this time from a non-scientific perspective, but poetic, human and endearing. This book traces the path both of my quest to raise awareness about autism and of my ambitions as a self-publisher.
This project started in 2019, as I was following the challenges of the famous annual Inktober© at the time. At the same time, I was beginning a serious period of raising awareness about Asperger's Syndrome; demystifying the stigma and honoring its perspectives and sensitivity. So I made the decision to convert each of the themes of the challenge into a feature on autism, first very subtle, then more and more direct, until the final revelation.
The success was unexpected and inspiring. People encouraged me to compile the drawings into a book. At first a simple zine project, I started adding longer texts, which took the form of poems, quotes and anecdotes.
To this spring of improvisation was added another of my oldest dreams: writing a book. Ambitious of one day having my own publishing house, I used this little project as a prototype and exploration ground for the layout, printing, editing and book business. Spilt Aspie, Aspie Encré in its original version, was born out of this poetic chaos.
