The World Sustainability Center - Graduation Project

The World Sustainability Center
Architecture - Graduation Project/ACE 3RD Prize/ Finalist omraneya competition - 2010
Global warming is a threat that can destroy the whole planet, only humans can fix this problem, but how they will do so if they don’t even care about thier nature, only when they know much more about the nature ,how it is affecting every thing in our life , makeing them love it ,which results in protecting your own environment.

Holding a message for all human beings ,trying to make them feel the nature from another prespective , to make them familiarized with the natural powers and how important they are, how they can use it to improve their living for a better future, with some fancy shows and exhibits.

To provide an engaging, interactive, immersive, and ever-changing experience that instills the fascinating potential of nature to address human problems, with the ultimate goal of moving people from inspiration to action.
Sustainability Concepts:
Performance: to demonstrate the use and the benefits of sustainable techniques and applicationsal around the site.
Inspiration: integrating science technologies with some new artistic shapes and forms to inspire the viewers and make the art from science and natural powers.
Activation: to activate and operate the sustainable technology in accordance with the functional needs of the form and the environment, during all the year.
Design Concepts:
The 5 pavilion forms came from the contour lines that formed them into this shapes.
All of them were affected by the weather on site, sun rays to focus perpendicularly on some areas of the roof and take in most of the sun rays to generate power , wind shaped the roof and they were seperately positioned to let the wind enter the whole site.

The whole design was inspired from the path lines in the urban space .
Each pavilion will have it’s own character that the visitors can choose any one to enter from outside.
The forms were placed in that style due to wind control, as all the forms draw closer to the one beside it at the end to speed up the wind speed at this point(from wider to narrow) which gives us a high flowof wind that can be used in playing with the facades of carbon shafts and generate electricity.
The world sustainability center is considered part of eco-tourism in alexandria, it focusses on the inspirational view of the nature.
The center has 3 main zones, the exhibits zone (entertainment), the auditorium hall (entertainment) and the educational zone.
The exhibits zone contains 4 main pavilions (water-sun-wind-earth), A temporary hall (life) and the centered show (land).
The educational zone contains conference rooms , classes and a library, the auditorium has it’s own enterance due to the. values of the visitors .
the main entry leads to the tour  inside the building starting from the interactive space through  the 6 exhibits around the grean space.
Land Art Generators:
Power generators were placed out side in the exterior plaza to take full advantage of the area outside and to be like land art generators to inspire the visitors how it works betwen wind and sun powers.
eco-energy flooring system (Piezoelectricity):
is employed to collect electricity powers from people’s pathes.
the piezoelectric technologies embedded in the design are for power conversion and storage of dc electricity.
The whole center forms were covered with a light outer zinc titanium membrane shell that will receive the power from the sun and convert it into electricity through power generators and that’s much better than using photovoltaic cells, it’s more effeicint in big scale forms ,much more beautiful, and it has an inspiring skin.

The Weather Pavilion
The master peice of the center, an exhibition with no exhibits or sculptures, only a large room with nothing physical or permanent inside. the pavilion will work on the contrary with the weather itself, as the room will be
in sun project mode in the middle of the winter and the opposite in the summer and to make this happens, it needs some applicationsof sustainability and some other technologies.
The Sun Pavilion
based on ibn el haytham theory in focusing the light rays, the generator was made with an outer glass shells the space to make it visible to public visitors.

Freeing up the middle space to make a small natural forest full of high trees with some sculptures holding lights  with ground soil.
Interior Design Sketch to the Nature Pavilion
The whole interior facade will be covered with water installation to make the visitors see water coustics and feel like they are under the water.

Interior Design Sketch of the Water Pavilion
The façade of the form will be composed of wind shafts which will sway in the wind to create a dynamic effect from inside and  outside.
