Garden Icon Project

Garden Icon Project
As with every project, this one needed a start. Luckily, mine was here:
The scenic Levens Hall, Kendal, United Kingdom was the main muse for my project.
It's a famous, and beautiful topiary garden, making for some nice, geometric shapes to work with, which in turn, makes for great icon material.
This was my final collage, (amateurish, I know) I  mostly just messing around with certain shapes I found interesting in the garden. This excercise did help me finalise on what shapes I wanted to end up using in my main icon.
These are my initial sketches, once again, amateurish, I know, sketches and physical art is not exactly my forte. But nonetheless, we can begin to see the budding start of my final icons, sans the third (that one was made at the tail-end). The final version of my "Bush & Tree" icon, were inspired by the third sketch, left to right, with some words of advice for harmonious placement of shapes, by my professor. The final castle icon was inspired by the twelfth sketch, with feedback from my classmates, based on the previous two sketches, to simplify the direct translation sketch, into more of a representation of the idea of "castle".
These here are the original, digital roughs, from inception; to finalisation. As mentioned before, the concept of three elements in the first icon was not working out, so I cut the semi-circle bush. Then I was recommended to flip the placement of the bush and the tree, for a better overall shape interaction. And finally, I experimented with hatching. Id never been able to pull off the look, so this time I wanted to do it justice. Same general process with the castle, mostly just fleshing out its details. With the fountain, I kept getting the look and feel of a clock, especially when trying with "lines" of water. So I had to experiment with an umbrella of water, to convey the concept of flowing water.
- HONORABLE MENTIONS BREAK -
Okay well, these weren't actually contenders for icons, more like a fun little break I took while designing the actual icons. I just wanted to include them because I thought it'd be fun :). And look, there they are running on a CRT!
And here they are! The final Icons! I think the last piece of advice I got was really helpful; and that was to put more space between the hatching, so it's a bit more noticeable. Overall I think these turned out well, and I'm happy with my work!
