Many pediatric dental offices offer a variety of methods for helping children relax during their appointments. These techniques include nitrous oxide (laughing gas), conscious sedation, and oral sedatives. Each one has its place in the field of pediatric dental sedation and is safe when given by a trained professional. Choosing the right method is determined by a variety of factors, including your child’s age, medical history, and specific needs for their dental procedure.

This type of sedation is safe and easy to use for most patients. During the treatment, we will inhale a small amount of this gas into your child’s nose, which quickly produces a drowsy, relaxed state. The gas is extremely effective for younger kids, but can cause side effects when inhaled too much or during a long procedure. Some common side effects of nitrous oxide include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and shivering.

When your child is very anxious or has a special medical condition that limits their ability to cooperate, we may recommend conscious sedation. During this technique, Dr. Karina administers a sedative medication by spraying it in your child’s nose or giving them the medicine through a nasal tube. It is a safe and effective way to reduce your child’s fear and anxiety, but they will remain aware throughout the procedure.

Another form of sedation, called oral sedation, is ingested through the mouth or nose and usually begins to work within 20 minutes. Dr. Khuong Nguyen thinks that this type of sedation is very safe and works by reducing your child’s anxiety and stress, as well as their pain.

Oral sedatives have been used safely and effectively for decades to help kids relax during dental procedures. The best oral sedatives take effect in about 20 minutes and produce a drowsy, calm state. They can be very useful for older kids and when there are complicated or invasive dental procedures being performed.

Other methods of sedation can be more invasive and involve additional medications, such as IV sedation. Your dentist will explain the different types of sedation available and discuss which is best for your child’s needs.
