Multifunctional Cardboard Furniture

Project: Multifunctional furniture (Xanita Board)
"The year is 2025 and South Africa has outlawed cheap plastic, MDF, and chipboard furniture, which has filled up landfills faster than expected. This move was met with great excitement locally and internationally but also some skepticism.
To prove the point South Africa has invited up-and-coming designers to live in a modern eco-village where they explore alternatives, and space in this village is extremely limited due to the number of designers who have shown interest in the initiative.
You have been invited to spend 5 years in the initiative where you will, live, work, and contribute to a better-designed South African future."
We were restricted by the material, only Xanita board was to be used for the product. Xanita board is layers of corrugated cardboard and adhesive to produce a strong and relatively durable board. It can be printed on or covered with various materials.

I looked into multifunctional furniture and explored cardboard as a material. Given the amount of board I would be (theoretically) limited to, I narrowed my scope down to a furniture piece for children. Following the Montessori methodology of creating environments for children, I went through multiple iterations until I landed on the final shapes. Although there would be different shapes and each would have different functions.
The final product is a chair, a bookshelf, and toy storage, however, due to its size and light weight it can be repositioned however the user wishes. Thus encouraging creative and imaginative play.
