Arts Umbrella is a non-profit centre for youth arts education in Vancouver, Canada. Splash is Arts Umbrella’s annual art auction, a marquee fundraising event for the centre where works donated by 100 established artists from across Canada and beyond are auctioned off in both live and silent formats.
Post was commissioned to establish an identity for Splash auctions and to design the 2022 catalogue. The challenge was to find a way to define a set of constant elements that could be used for all Splash events, as well as define a variable element that could set each event apart from one another. To solve for this, we conceived of a set of guidelines for how unique cover artwork could be created for the auction catalogues on an annual basis. We then followed these guidelines to create the first set of cover artworks.
The cover art for the Splash 2022 catalogue is a generated by running a simple program. Celebrating Splash's 40th anniversary, the script outputs 40 rectangles, each with a different colour, size, and position on the page. This program was run over 600 times to produce unique cover images for the "Unique" and "Artist" editions of the catalogue.
