Background
Automobile accidents can be catastrophic, and one of the main causes of fatalities and severe injuries is the sudden transfer of enormous forces upon impact. In modern vehicles, "crumple zones" are designed to absorb some of this force by deforming upon collision. This mechanism transfers the energy of the crash to other parts of the vehicle, reducing the impact on passengers. However, if the vehicle stops too abruptly, passengers can still experience a high level of force. This is where my project comes in. By taking inspiration from crumple zones, I am developing a safety seat mechanism that not only reacts to collisions but also proactively minimizes the effect of sudden forces. The seat uses AI to detect imminent collisions and initiate a special procedure to mitigate the potential impact. This technology has the potential to save countless lives and reduce the number of serious injuries resulting from car accidents.

Objective
The objective is to develop a vehicle safety seat mechanism that is unparalleled in its ability to handle collisions. This mechanism will not only react in the moment of a collision, but it will also incorporate a proactive component to its functionality that will come into use before a collision occurs. The mechanism's AI component is responsible for detecting and predicting a potential collision, and it follows a highly specialized procedure to reduce or completely avoid the severe health effects that car accidents can have on drivers and passengers. My approach involves a comprehensive process that includes sketching, designing, optimizing, building, and performing rigorous crash tests to ensure the highest level of safety and reliability.


Brief Description
This groundbreaking invention has been meticulously crafted with one goal in mind: to enhance the safety of drivers and passengers in vehicles. The innovative Smart Safety Seat mechanism is primarily focused on the seating compartment of cars and has been designed to operate through a powerful combination of AI algorithms and mechanical engineering solutions. This state-of-the-art mechanism will not interfere with the design of vehicles from the interior nor from the exterior. It is a game-changing device that will be seamlessly integrated into every seat of the vehicle and will effectively absorb a portion of the impulse generated during a collision. By utilizing this cutting-edge technology, countless lives can be saved, and many injuries can be prevented. The Smart Safety Seat has undergone rigorous testing under various collision scenarios using crash test dummies to ensure its effectiveness in real-world situations.


Facts about the project
This project is the result of my own curiosity, which is not sponsored by others. However, Dr. Ishwar Singh has been helping me with obtaining expensive components to build the AI system as well as guiding me towards different competitions and even businesses. The project is mainly for experimental purposes, however, if the results turn out to be impressive then it will be advertised and hopefully begin the manufacturing process to be implemented on cars. ​​​​​​​


Below is a screenshot of me setting up the 3D depth camera to work on a Raspberry Pi. This camera will be used on the Smart Safety Seat as it has the AI capabilities to track objects and measure their distance from the camera. I will be using this camera in combination with a 30-degree Lidar sensor to accurately predict a potential car accident.

• Adding 360-degree Lidar by YDLIDAR for better navigation/more vision
• OAK-D Lite 3D depth camera for more vision and object tracking
• Using NVIDIA Jetson Nano Single Board Computer for more processing power.
• Using ROS (Robot Operating System) to control the automation.

Purpose
After witnessing a fatal accident involving a close friend, I realized how unsafe cars can be. Researching the issue, I discovered that the sudden transfer of forces upon impact is a leading cause of fatalities and severe injuries. Inspired by crumple zones, I developed the Smart Safety Seat to act as a buffer between the passenger and the vehicle chassis. By using AI to predict collisions and adjust the seating position to mitigate their impact, It has the potential to save countless lives and reduce injuries resulting from car accidents. My passion for road safety drives me to continue improving and promoting the Smart Safety Seat.
