Introducing the Y's x adidas Forum - a limited edition shoe designed to celebrate 50 years of Yohji Yamamoto's Y's brand and pay homage to one of the most iconic shoes from adidas, the Forum Hi. This shoe is a unique twist on the original Forum design, incorporating Yamamoto's minimalist aesthetic and pattern expertise.
Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto is a legendary figure within the industry, with a history that dates back to 1972 when he launched Y's. For Spring/Summer 2023, Yamamoto has partnered with adidas to release a Japan-exclusive capsule collection that includes an avant-garde take on the classic Superstar model and a white Forum Hi with additional buckle straps and debossed prints on the edges.

The adidas Forum, designed in 1984 by Jacques Chassaing, was a breakthrough in basketball shoe design, incorporating foot-strapping for better stability and comfort. With the Y's x adidas Forum, the original design concept is retained, while incorporating Yohji Yamamoto's unique vision to create a shoe that is both functional and stylish. The brief for the Y's x adidas Forum was to create a unique version of the Forum that would reflect Yohji Yamamoto's minimalist aesthetic and pattern expertise. The challenge was to retain the original lines and panels of the Forum while adding a twist that would make the shoe unique.
We chose to focus on the strapping, which was a defining feature of the original Forum.
Instead of using the cross-shaped leather panel stitched on the main quarter to symbolise the straps, the Y's x adidas Forum features proper webbing straps that cross each other on the lateral side, providing better ankle support.
The first visual concept of the Y's x adidas Forum shoe,
showcasing the new floating straps around a shoe mixes with the original adidas Forum panel lines.
The result is a shoe that stays true to the original design concept while improving upon it, a hallmark of Yohji Yamamoto's design philosophy. The T-shaped toecap, inspired by the adidas originals Samba, gives a nod to the heritage of adidas while adding a new dimension to the shoe's design. Available in two classic colorways - full black and full white - the shoe features premium leather and strong corduroy polyester fabric for added durability.
The Y's SUPERPOSITION logo and wordings printed on the lateral side create a contrasting effect that enhances the overall aesthetic of the shoe. Exclusively offered in Y's and Yohji Yamamoto boutiques in Japan in beginning of 2023, the Y's x adidas Forum is a must-have shoe for anyone looking to make a statement with their footwear.
