depending structure study
Grit bins are located about 2 kilometers from any major road or the edge of a city park. They store, as the name implies, grit and make roads safe for traffic in winter. In larger ones, such as those often found in Munich, the container can store up to 800 kilograms of grit and is supported by hollow 10 cm by 10 cm metal beams and steel C-sections of various thicknesses. They are located about two meters from the road and store the grit high enough to be easily transferred to smaller city vehicles. Unfortunately, this elaborate and stable structure is only used in winter.
Our intervention is to attach a platform and basketball hoop to the structure, making it usable year round. In regular use, basketball is played, but the backboard of the basket can also be folded down and becomes a platform for events. The person on the platform experiences a change of perspective and looks differently at the otherwise familiar space. This platform can be reached by a fold-out ladder. When this is not in use, it is hidden behind a C-profile in the upper area of the grit container.
The grit container at Karl-Stützel-Platz is particularly suitable for this purpose. This is located in the eastern area of the square, which is about 80 square meters in size, and is barely visible from the street. An event does not disturb the road traffic. A low fence separates the square from a playground with a playhouse operated by Kreisjugendring. The platform can be used by them for small events in good weather, while the basketball ring is an additional play option.
All main parts of the intervention (except an aluminum axle) are made of plywood. All parts are made with a CNC milling machine. Thus, if necessary, several platforms for containers different locations in the city can be produced. If necessary, the platforms can be assembled and disassembled without tools, without leaving traces on the stock.
The reproducible and intervention offers users* various possibilities of use. The platform offers the possibility of a change of perspective and through the means of playing together, previously less used places can be transformed into a meeting place.
