Debauchery
In June 2022, I was commissioned to create an animated music video for a cover of the song 'Debauchery' by David Gray. I discussed the idea for the music video with the client. They wanted a love story with two main characters in their early thirties. They wanted a similiar 2D animation style to what I created for my Final Year film at college.
I brainstormed, made moodboards, explored different colour palettes and drew storyboards.
I created the assets, backgrounds and animations using Procreate, Adobe Premiere Pro for compositing and Adobe After Effects for post-production lighting, colour and grain.
Colour palettes
I chose a seaside setting with a wintry atmosphere inspired by the song's lyrics, which informed the beachy, slightly dreary colour palette that is seen throughout the music video.
Character Design
I dressed the characters in warm coats and scarves to depict the cold weather, which is contrasted later on when they meet at the pub, and its interior is yellow, orange and full of warmth.
Storyboards
I drew out multiple storyboards to get the story and series of events right. I composed the characters and objects in the frame, and I took notes on the right hand side of each frame of what could be happening, or what the characters could be saying.
Backgrounds
I finished the music video in early February 2023, so overall this took me about seven months, whereby I was also working full-time in retail up until January 2023.
It proved very challenging but I am happy with how it turned out, and I learned to animate in Procreate which is another skill to have.
