Beatrix Potter Book Cover Series

Beatrix Potter Book Cover Series
Used principles of graphic design to develop a system using elements that work together and seperately to create a unified composition across a form. The goal was for the solution to simply and clearly convey the title of the story, the author's name, and a hint about the books' plot.
I developed strong sketches and concept ideas for this project and made many revisions. I chose to use the author Beatrix Potter because I have loved her books since I was a child and I researched her well to know that the Peter Rabbit books I selected were originally letters she wrote to children she knew before they were books.
I presented these book cover designs to selected staff at my university and won an award for concept idea and overall design success.
This is the final version of the book cover project. The idea was to make all the covers look like envelopes from the time period Beatrix Potter originally sent the letters to the children she knew. These covers would be a collector's item.
Each of the back covers had their own original letter that Beatrix Potter wrote. The letters were the foundation of each specific story.
Here are two of the real letter examples that I added to the back covers of the books. Beatrix Potter wrote both of these letters and sent them out as the first versions of the stories.
These are the very first sketches I did for this project; they are all ideas for a Beatrix Potter Series.
This is the first version of what the book cover series looked like. I changed the typography along with the envelope coloring and more for the final version.
The first version font did not look right, so I learned how to use pen and ink for this project and later digitalized it in photoshop. I am really glad I did this because it helped to really create the letter look I was going for.
This is what the book covers looked like layed out in indesign about to be sent to print. From the first version the envelope color was replaced with real envelope from the time period Beatrix Potter sent the real letters. Also, the calligraphic lettering I created replaced the original font, and so did a copy of Beatrix potter's real signature I found archived. I am really happy with the final product of these covers and am happy I found a solution after all of my revisions.
