The Edinburgh Recipe is created using naturally sourced materials from the city, with aggregate from Arthur Seat, sand from Portobello beach and Jesmonite as the bonding agent for the concrete, representing pride and gratitude in the capital. We have worked together to create a trophy that celebrates the city of Edinburgh and aligns itself to the sustainable values of Edinburgh College of Art, Humanities and Social Sciences.

To incorporate Edinburgh throughout the design of the trophy and we let the natural landscape dictate the form. We found the Pentlands more visually interesting and incorporated its cross section into the design, where each trophy are joint together. We then pushed the form of the trophy further by adding a slanted face on the top, to make the trophy looks different each angle you turn it, and the more you look and play with it, the more you discover the elements within it.

By having all ten trophies, we could appreciate how each of them acted in the context of each other, portraying partnership and support and creating a series that was a separate design in itself. We liked the idea of the series are only complete at one moment in time, before they are all awarded to their separate winners. The series is united for a fleeting moment then each trophy's individual identity is revealed as they are taken away. We feel this wholly reflects the value of CAHSS, that individuals unify to create a beautiful series.

We wanted to represent us as product designers in the design and display our multidisciplinary skills within product design, including digital manufacture and traditional making techniques. Digital techniques such as 3D printing and computer numerical control (CNC) are used, while woodwork, pouring and casting techniques demonstrate the traditional making skills. The final outcome of the trophy is heavily dictated by the production techniques, the imperfections created throughout the design process evidence the use of digital and traditional making techniques in the production. This trophy can only be made using digital techniques, but only as a tool for aiding traditional techniques.
