How to Instill Habits in our Students
To help keep the classroom orderly and running smoothly, we regularly teach routines and procedures designed to help students follow the goals and develop healthy habits.
We will explore how the brain processes habits when teaching procedures and routines.

Make it Obvious
The goal is to make it obvious to our brain that it's time to start playing with the new habit.

One of the most critical factors that can help students develop healthy habits is repetition. This is because it can help them stick with the new behavior. Having a consistent cue is also very important when it comes to implementing new procedures and routines.

One of the most important cues that can help students establish healthy habits is having a consistent cue. For instance, if you want them to clean their work area, there has to be a clear indication that it's time for them to start doing so.

One of the most effective cues to help students establish healthy habits is switching off the lights, playing a song, or ringing a bell. These actions help make it clear that it's time for the cleanup.

Make it Attractive
Your students should be able to develop new habits by engaging in challenging or fun actions. They will also be more likely to adopt an automated practice if the activities are enjoyable.

The brain processes new habits by constantly asking questions about what's in it for us. If an action takes too much energy and doesn't give us the same or greater reward, the brain will automatically set it aside and not do it again.

As a teacher, your job is to ensure that the habits you want to instill are fun for your students. For instance, if you have students who like to dance and move, playing music or singing a cleanup song can be a fun way to
introduce new routines.

If there's a competitive group, you can create a friendly competition between the students to see who can clean up the fastest. You can also assign different tasks to the students during cleanup time and rotate them so they can get a new job later on.

Try to think of a way that the habit you want your students to adopt can be something they'll consider worth the energy.

Make it Easy
Make sure that the steps that will lead to success are transparent.

Ensure that the expectations you're setting are clear and easy to follow. You can also model the actions and provide checklists and instructions.
Clear communication between you and your students is also vital to make it easier for them to follow and implement new habits. Having clear coding bins makes it easier for them to place their assignments in the correct location.

Make it easy, consistent, and clear. Also, don't underestimate labels.

Make it Satisfying
One essential factor you should consider when developing new habits is ensuring that the actions are satisfying for your students.

When it comes to modeling the habits you're teaching your students, try to praise and thank them for modeling the positive aspects of the program. Pointing out negative ones can make it hard for them to follow through and develop the desired behavior.

Being generous with your students can help them develop new habits and follow procedures.
