본 작업은 고려 불화에 표현된 도상 이미지를 재해석한 엽서 모음으로,
이전의 작업 <마음의 숲> 연작과 석사학위논문 <고려 불화를 재해석한 일러스트레이션 연구(김상규, 2023)>를 바탕으로 하고 있습니다.

고려 불화에 표현된 상징적 이미지인 도상 28가지를 소재로 제작된 엽서집.
엽서 앞면에는 고려 불화의 도상 형태를 바탕으로 재해석한 28가지 일러스트레이션이 표현되고, 뒷면에는 그 의미와 관련된 경전이나 시 구절이 쓰여져 있습니다.
이를 통해, 불교 미술에 담긴 아름다움과 깊은 의미에 대해 느끼고 음미할 수 있습니다.
또한, 엽서에 표현된 불화의 도상 이미지와 자세한 설명을 담은 소책자 해설서 1개를 제공합니다.
A collection of postcards made with 28 icons, symbolic images expressed in Goryeo Buddhist paintings.
On the front of the postcard, 28 illustrations reinterpreted based on the iconographic form of Goryeo Buddhist paintings are expressed, and on the back, scriptures or verses related to the meaning are written.
Through this, you can feel and appreciate the beauty and deep meaning of Buddhist art.
In addition, one booklet commentary containing the iconographic image and detailed explanation of the Buddhist painting expressed on the postcard is provided.
고려 불화 도상이란?
고려시대의 불교 회화, 즉 고려 불화는 높은 예술성을 지닌 한국의 문화유산입니다.
고려 불화의 조형적인 특징은 선명한 색상, 화려하고 장식적인 문양, 섬세한 필선, 정교한 형태 등으로 설명됩니다. 이는 중국이나 일본 등 이웃 나라의 불화와 구별되는 고유한 특징이며, 독창적인 미학이라고 할 수 있다. 스튜디오 무상에서는 고려 불화의 조형적 특징과 아름다움을 살려, 그 섬세한 형태와 선명한 색채를 현대적 그래픽 일러스트레이션으로 재해석하여 새롭게 표현해보고자 하였습니다.
불화는 ‘도상(圖', iconography)’이라고 지칭되는 상징적 이미지를 통해, 불교의 이야기를 전달하였습니다. 고려 불화의 도상은 『화엄경』, 『법화경』, 『관무량수경』 등 여러 경전을 바탕으로 그려졌으며, 수많은 이야기를 담고 있습니다.
때로는 우리나라의 불교 설화가 반영되어 의상대사 설화에 나타나는 수정염주나 파랑새가 그려지기도 했습니다.

What is the iconography of Goryeo Buddhist painting?
Goryeo Buddhist painting is Korean cultural heritage with high artistry.
The formative characteristics of Goryeo Buddhist paintings are explained by vivid colors, splendid and decorative patterns, delicate brush strokes, and elaborate shapes. This is a unique feature that distinguishes Buddhist paintings from neighboring countries such as China and Japan, and can be said to be an original aesthetic. Studio Musang tried to reinterpret and express the delicate forms and vivid colors of Goryeo Buddhist paintings in a new way by utilizing the formative characteristics and beauty of Goryeo Buddhist paintings.
Buddhist paintings conveyed the story of Buddhism through symbolic images called 'iconography'. The iconography of Goryeo Buddhist paintings was drawn based on several sutras such as Avatamsaka Sutra, Lotus Sutra, and contains numerous stories.
Sometimes, Korean Buddhist tales were reflected, and crystal beads or bluebirds appearing in the tales of the great monk Uisang were drawn.

This product was planned through an investigation into what kind of content and meaning the iconography of Goryeo Buddhist paintings contained and how it was expressed. In addition, 28 postcards were produced to reflect the 28 heavens of Buddhist cosmology. We hope that you will appreciate the meaning of Buddhist paintings along with 「Symbols of Goryeo Buddhist Paintings 28 Postcard」.

- Goryeo Buddhist paintings sometimes use gold or silver teeth to express light and sacredness. Reflecting these characteristics, we tried to reproduce the beauty of Goryeo Buddhist paintings by putting silver foil on the surface of the case.

명상과 사색의 시간
이 엽서 모음은 일반적인 엽서와 같이 소중한 사람들에게 주는 편지 용지로 사용할 수도 있지만, 그림과 경전 구절을 함께 감상하며 명상과 사색을 하는 매개체가 될 수도 있습니다. 최근 젊은 층에서 물이나 불을 바라보며 멍하게 생각을 비우는 일을 '물멍', '불멍' 등으로 부르는데, 이렇듯 시각적 대상을 바라보며 명상하는 수행 방법은 불교에도 전해집니다.
부처와 보살의 모습을 마음 속으로 떠올리는 관상 염불(觀像念佛)이 수행되기도 했고, 극락정토의 해와 물, 땅과 나무 등 16가지 대상을 바라보는 십육관(十六觀)을 통해 마음의 괴로움을 덜어내기도 했습니다. 이 엽서에 그려진 불교적 의미를 담은 도상들을 바라보며 마음의 휴식을 느낄 수 있기를 바랍니다.

This collection of postcards can be used as regular postcards for letters to loved ones, but it can also be used as a medium for meditation and contemplation while enjoying pictures and scriptures together. Recently, emptying one's thoughts while looking at water or fire is called 'mul-meong' or 'bul-meong' as a buzzword in Korea. This way of meditating while gazing at a visual object is also found in Buddhism.
