Small residential interiors can also be unique. Endangered Corals is a one-bedroom apartment that is embodied in minimalism, the method of smooth transits (typical for Aranchii Architects), decentralized computational accents and a reminder of the precarious balance of the Earth's natural world at the same time.
MAIN DESIGN
An apartment of up to 50 m2 in the centre of Kyiv has a bedroom separated with a translucent partition (which is curtained if necessary and in the absence of a central air conditioning system contains an external heat pump unit providing an additional closet) and non orthogonal wall geometry, which contributes smoother transits to a more compact space.
Whereas the perimeter with cut corners allows the island arrangement of upholstered furniture and the peninsular configuration of the dining table. The dressing room is also located behind a translucent partition, although in contrast to the bedroom, in the least sunlit part of the space.
The zoning of the joint space is made with multi-accents - a decentralized wooden structure on the ceiling/walls, which at the same time emphasizes the main functional areas of the apartment and integrates their (areas’)lighting - lighting is not diffused, but zonally accentuated.
The kitchen with a built-in niche configuration includes a Nochvy sink made of artificial stone by Aranchii Architects. Instead of a TV panel, a powerful spherical speaker system Aranchii Acoustics Morphogen 0.2 occupies a prominent place.
COMPUTATIONAL ARCHITECTURE + SUSTAINABILITY
The decentralized structure on the ceiling is made of renewable Ukrainian wood, and fabrication and installation have become much more technological with the use of a parametric model, which not only allowed automated marking of elements and layout but also variability and adjustment of structure at the design stage while choosing optimal parameters regarding location and number of elements on the ceiling.
Sustainable development and human health cannot be imagined without natural light. That is why translucent partitions are in the bedroom (letting light from another window into the shared space) and in the wardrobe (letting light from the shared room). The white colour of the walls and ceilings on the side of the windows helps to maximize the reflection of rays and illuminate the entire space.
The climate is supported by high-efficiency air-to-air heat pumps, which reduce the carbon footprint of heating / cooling the apartment by 2-3 times compared to central heating and conventional cooling. Wooden structures are a reminder of extinct corals, 70% of which have already disappeared in the waters of the seas and oceans due to global warming. Therefore, reducing the carbon footprint is extremely important for wildlife, even in a small, detached interior.
