DEVIANT DECADENCE

DEVIANT DECADANCE

In the 1700s, the aristocrats embraced a new interest in the orients. Orientalism encompasses turkish, chinese and japanese influence into european designs. Many artists never travelled to China and based their inspiration on tales  and goods from  foreign traders. This brought about a new style, Chinoiserie. The aristocratic fascination with asia became apparent in the style of clothing, tapestry and pottery where their frivolous assumption flourished. Chinoiserie is a reflection of decadence, frivolity, extravagance and ignorance of the royalty in that era; a foreboding of the French Revolution for such excessiveness would and did only lead to a tragic end. A contemporary look at such frivolity would be the rising afflunce from the East. As China has become a superpower nation, its people have an abundance of wealth to spend.

A reverse of fortunes- the Chinese are now embracing western culture conspicuously.
